The Fascinating Beginning of Photography
Photography, a term that comes from Greek words for “drawing with light,” is a captivating art form that captures moments in time. The story of photography begins in the early 19th century. Before digital cameras and smartphones, the first camera, known as the ‘Camera Obscura,’ was a simple box with a small hole on one side. It projected images from the outside onto a surface on the inside but did not yet capture them permanently.
The First Permanent Photograph
The journey from transient images to permanent photographs was a groundbreaking development in the history of photography. Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, a French inventor, took the first permanent photograph in 1826 or 1827. He used a process called heliography, which involved exposing a pewter plate coated with bitumen to light. The process was slow, requiring an exposure time of eight hours, but it marked the beginning of photography as we know it.
From Daguerreotypes to Digital
After Niépce’s initial discovery, the development of photography rapidly progressed. Louis Daguerre, another French inventor, introduced the daguerreotype in 1839, significantly reducing exposure time and improving image clarity. This method became the first popular form of photography. Over the years, photography evolved from the cumbersome wet plates to the more practical dry plates, eventually leading to the invention of roll film. The introduction of digital cameras in the late 20th century revolutionized photography, making it more accessible to the masses.

Today, photography is an integral part of our lives, with millions of photographs taken and shared daily. From professional DSLR cameras to the cameras in our smartphones, the technology has come a long way since the first camera obscura. Photography continues to be a powerful medium for storytelling, art, and capturing the world’s beauty.
